Event Under $1,000
Anniston Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home
Anniston, Alabama
Anniston Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home invited all property owners to a Memorial Day cookout. Grilled hotdogs, chips, cookies, soft drinks and lemonade were enjoyed by over 200 people. Employees spent time walking through the cemetery reminiscing with families about their loved ones. Several guests remarked that eating on the cemetery grounds reminded them of homecoming and decoration days at old churches and cemeteries in the country.

The KIP judges had the following to say about this entry:
- I'm not familiar with homecoming and decoration days - sounds interesting and if this event reminded people of those events they grew up with - even better. Good tie-in with Memorial Day. Good community involvement. Good outreach so clients get to know and feel comfortable with staff before a crisis.
- Probably very popular in a military community - allows traditional Memorial Day to be accomplished with a simple tribute.
- Direct invitations to property owners was a good idea. I like the way the event made the cemetery about the living as well as the deceased.
- Good goal to connect employees and families of deceased. Knowing their audience is evident.
