Event Over $1,000

Honorable Mention

Keystone Group Holdings

100 of Keystone Group's funeral and cemetery properties each held 9/11 ceremonies featuring a memorial wall, balloon release, charitable fundraising and other events.

A 6' high x 24' wide Memorial Wall with the names of each of the 3,044 victims of September 11, 2001, was erected at 100 locations across the United States. For 10 days between September 2 and September 11, 2002, approximately 350 balloons were released each day by community organizations in symbolic remembrance of each of the 3,044 victims. On September 11, 2002, the funeral and cemetery locations also held or participated in a community event paying tribute to the victims of the attacks.

The KIP judges had the following to say about this entry:

  • Over the top in a good way. What a fabulous PR effort.
  • Very impressive effort. Cost effective if you think about coverage you received. For many communities - this was centerpiece of 9-11-02 events.
  • These were very tasteful ways for members of the public to express their emotions and deal with the losses of Sept. 11. I like the charity aspect, also.
  • Large-scale event with lots of coordination between different sites to make it consistent. Good community relations.
  • Company provided many ways to help people deal with grief and catastrophe. But one note about the balloons - they can be bad for birds.
  • I liked the combination of efforts that drew in all aspects of the community and offered a variety of ways to get involved.
