Michigan Memorial Park Inc.
Flat Rock, Michigan
Michigan Memorial Park held a 9/11 remembrance service, "Downriver Remembers," in conjunction with other community organizations. The event was to dedicate four permanent memorials - one each to fire, police and emergency personnel and one to commemorate the events of September 11, 2001.
Elected officials, fire, police and rescue personnel participated in the moving ceremony, as well as a survivor of the World Trade Center attack. More than 100 emergency service vehicles and a Scottish bagpipe band paraded through the cemetery to the "Shrine of Remembrance" mausoleum, where they were greeted by a patriotic crowd of 6,000. The "Star Spangled Banner" and "God Bless America" were performed by a 65-piece orchestra with vocal accompaniment, and the bronze memorials were unveiled at the conclusion to a standing ovation.

The KIP judges had the following to say about this entry:
- Very stirring descriptions of the event as well as how it came together. Great community involvement and image-building for the memorial park.
- A lasting tribute supported by a single day's ceremony - a wise combination and clearly a well received program of activities.
- This event was clearly a big success! Very impressive publicity materials - good to coordinate with local stores and McDonald's. This was a huge undertaking that reached so many people.
- They took a risk and made a commitment to the program. Great effort to get a lot of organizations and groups involved.
- 6,000 spectators! Impressed that they took on an event five times the size of their past events.
- Extremely successful - this park made a name for itself and will probably be remembered for it.
